Introducing Metabolic Support Sri Lanka (MSSL)

At Metabolic Support, we know that people living with Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMDs) face challenges across the globe, but sadly support is not always available. That’s why we are expanding our global work and starting with a meaningful partnership in Sri Lanka, a country where the need for IMD advocacy, awareness, and support is clear and where we have established connections.

Sri Lanka is home to 23 million people, with most families living in rural communities. Although the healthcare system is funded and accessed in a similar way to the NHS– the support structures around rare diseases and IMDs are still in early development. Rather than seeing this as a barrier, we see it as an opportunity to work alongside local experts and families to build something meaningful from the ground up. It is a chance to learn, to share, and to grow together.

Global collaboration benefits everyone. The IMD community in Sri Lanka will gain clearer information and stronger support, while UK communities learn from the innovation and insight that come from developing IMD care in a different context. It helps us understand how to deliver care in rural settings, build awareness from scratch, and connect clinicians and families in practical ways, strengthening our work at home. By raising global awareness of metabolic conditions, we also increase opportunities for research, investment, and collaboration. Strengthening one IMD community strengthens us all. No one should face an IMD alone. Standing alongside Sri Lanka is a step towards a world where every family, everywhere, has access to the care, information, and support they need to live well today, tomorrow, and beyond.
