Understanding Anticipatory Grief: Grieving Before the Loss of a loved one

Anticipatory grief is the grief we feel before an expected loss, often when someone we love is seriously ill. It can bring sadness, anxiety about the future, fear of change, anger, dread, or emotional exhaustion.

Although the loss hasn’t happened yet, the feelings are very real. You might find yourself “mourning in advance”, imagining life without that person, or even feeling conflicted or guilty about your emotions. Everyone responds differently, and you may also be supporting others while trying to manage your own feelings.

Anticipatory grief isn’t wrong or premature. It can help you begin processing what’s happening and create space to say the things that matter. Whatever you’re feeling is human. You’re not alone, and support is available if you need it.
