Think Ammonia: Sri Lanka

Message from Dr Imalke Kankananarachchi

In Sri Lanka, hyperammonemia is an underrecognized condition, primarily due to the lack of investigative facilities and emergency treatment options. However, it is crucial to consider the possibility of hyperammonemia in various clinical scenarios. Accurate sampling and proper transport are essential for reliable interpretation of ammonia results. Our goal is to empower healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively identify and manage elevated ammonia levels. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the health and lives of those at risk .

Ammonia Screening in Sri Lanka

Following engagement with the campaign, and on the recommendation of Professor Stefan Kölker, Dr Imalke Kankananarachchi secured a point-of-care ammonia analyser, generously donated by the Sri Lankan Association of Oregon. The device has already enabled a positive diagnosis of hyperammonaemia in a patient, allowing prompt follow-up and leading to improved health outcomes.
