Think Ammonia: MetabERN
In 2024, Metabolic Support UK delivered a presentation at the MetabERN annual conference in Budapest, Hungary. Here, we shared details of the campaign and invited MetabERN to collaborate with us on improving outcomes for hyperammonaemia. Following this, we undertook a number of educational activites in collaboration with the network, including the delivery of a pan-European webinar.
Details for this webinar as well as a session recordings are available, below:
Think Ammonia: MetabERN (Webinar)
Metabolic Support UK was proud to partner with MetabERN on the “Think Ammonia! Test and Diagnosis of Hyperammonaemia in Time” webinar on 18 September. The session brought together clinicians and patient representatives to raise awareness of hyperammonaemia and emphasise the need for fast recognition, testing, and diagnosis.
The programme featured expert insights from Prof François Eyskens (University Hospital of Antwerp), who introduced hyperammonaemia in inherited metabolic disorders, Dr Dries Dobbelaere (University Hospital of Lille), who outlined early and late neonatal symptoms, and Dr Gavin Mercer-Smith (Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust), who explained the stability and causes of increased ammonia levels in patient samples.
Our Campaigns and Communications Lead, Jonathan Gibson, delivered a presenation on our Think Ammonia campaign, highlighting the importance of early recognition and management from the perspective of our communities, ending the session with practical ways attendees can get involved with the campaign.
