Think Ammonia: Greece
Introduction by Persephone Augoustides-Savvopoulou Emeritus Professor Medical faculty University of Thessaloniki Greece, Vice-President of the Panhellenic Advocate for Inherited Metabolic Diseases KRIKOS ZOIS (Greek for Life-Link).
It is well known that ammonia is a metabolite found in all living organisms. Less known however, is when and how this natural metabolite can turn into a silent predator…Our objective is to increase awareness of the potentially lethal consequences of undiagnosed high ammonia levels in the blood. Hyperammonemia can affect individuals of all ages. Metabolic diseases are not only pediatric diseases -they can manifest at any age!
Our aim is to decrease the no of undiagnosed or misdiagnosed individuals with hyperammonemia by increasing awareness primarily of those in the frontline-the HCPs! The triple objective is not only to think ammonia but to act in time by appropriate measurements and management to prevent long term sequelae including death! Metabolic support UK’s Think Ammonia campaign in the UK inspired our society to run the campaign in Greece!
Our first step was our recent webinar on 8th of March 2025 titled “THINK AMMONIA-YOU CAN SAVE LIVES!” where leading international experts shared their invaluable experience and insights. Our webinar was also endorsed by MetabERN – European Research Network for Rare Diseases! All the videos of the webinar are available at https://www.livemedia.com/krikoszoisammonia
