Think Ammonia: Canada

In Canada, hyperammonemia often goes unrecognized or is diagnosed too late, leading to serious impacts on patient outcomes.

While a limited number of specialized hospitals support diagnosis and management, awareness, testing and access to urgent treatment still varies between hospitals and regions.

Improving early recognition, timely diagnosis and rapid treatment is essential to achieving better outcomes. Our goals are to increase awareness and education, support best practices in care, and strengthen access to treatment throughout the country.

Posters for Canada

The posters below have been developed in order to raise awareness about hyperammonaemia and provide practical advice to improve outcomes. Please download and print the posters and display them in relevant settings e.g. emergency departments or other healthcare settings. The first poster is designed for healthcare professionals, the second poster is for the public.

Guidance for healthcare professionals

Hyperammonaemia is a state in which ammonia levels in the blood are elevated. This is a time critical medical emergency with the risk of death and serious neurological damage. Symptoms can be nonspecific in the first instance, meaning that it can often be mistaken for more common conditions such as sepsis.

We’ve compiled resources developed in the UK to aid in the diagnosis, testing and treatment of hyperammonaemia to improve outcomes.
